4 issues in public safety with high priority
Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and street safety funding
New equipment will let fire and EMS vehicles change traffic signals as they approach, cutting response delays at intersections.
Bullet-resistant components for police vehicles
The city is buying police vehicles with bullet-resistant components, up to about $74,000. The good news for taxpayers: it's funded through a state grant from the Governor's Office, not your property taxes.
Overhaul of Chapter 6 animal ordinances
The city's animal rules are getting a full modernization — new definitions, clearer enforcement standards, and several brand-new rules like mandatory microchipping and penalties for abandoning animals at the shelter. Pet owners should pay attention to the microchip requirement and the rules about dogs being restrained even in their own yards.
Shelter capacity strain
The shelter is at max capacity on dogs and 158% on cats, with a bunny and guinea pig also needing homes. Staff hope the new microchipping rule will cut overcrowding by getting lost pets back to owners faster.
