Ex-Trump prosecutor Smith forcefully defends investigations as Republicans assail his team's tactics

Former special counsel Jack Smith has forcefully defended his prosecutions of President Donald Trump and his investigative tactics. He pushed back against repeated Republican efforts to paint him and his team as partisan political operators during a Senate hearing Tuesday that featured a senator’s bungled attempt to accuse him of lying about a basketball game. The hearing came as Republicans have pushed for Smith to be prosecuted and offered a forum for them to assail him for what they contend were politicized prosecutions that unfolded at the height of the 2024 presidential race. Democrats rallied in defense of Smith, eliciting testimony on the legal and factual basis for the criminal cases against then-candidate Trump.

Well-preserved tooth from Pacific mastodon found in a creek in San Francisco Bay Area

Brigid Lynch was working along a wooded creek in a mountainous part of the San Francisco Bay Area on a habitat restoration project when something that didn’t look like the rocks she’d been studying caught her eye. It turned out to be the fossilized tooth of a Pacific mastodon. Lynch, a geomorphologist at Balance Hydrologics, made the discovery earlier this year. She spotted the fossil while working on a project to protect the threatened California red-legged frog in a preserve in San Mateo County. The public land management agency announced the find this week, and that it has been donated to Stanford University.

The poorest in the US can't find housing even as low-income units sit empty

The poorest people in the U.S. face the most acute shortage of affordable homes. That’s partly because the majority of low-income housing financed in recent years has been for those earning at least 50% of an area’s median income. Now, some cities are seeing an uptick in vacancies in these units as their rents approach those of market-rate apartments. As a result, some people who qualify are opting for market-rate apartments with less income-verification requirements and a faster chance of approval. It’s creating a paradoxical situation where some affordable units sit empty because the poorest people still can’t afford to rent them. Experts say more federal funding for housing vouchers is needed to bridge this gap.

EU seeks to reassure a Trump-rattled Greenland with promise of a new partnership and investment

The European Union is promising Greenland a stronger partnership and hundreds of millions of euros in investment. It wants to reassure Greenland after U.S. President Donald Trump's threats to take control of the island. On a visit to Nuuk Monday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen offered 200 million euros to help tackle climate change and improve education, fisheries and infrastructure. She also wants to double EU budget support by 2028. Greenland is a semiautonomous territory of Denmark. The EU's focus on Greenland has increased since Trump's claims raised sovereignty concerns. Von der Leyen says Greenland's future is for its people and Denmark to decide.

The political landscape in the U.S. is volatile as the final midterm of President Donald Trump's presidency approaches. Trump administration makes another appeal to the Supreme Court to allow mail ballot restrictions

The Trump administration is renewing its appeal to the Supreme Court to allow new restrictions on mail ballots in time for the midterms. Sunday's filing came after a federal court judge extended an order against the Postal Service enforcing President Donald Trump’s executive order for the November elections. The legal wrangling is happening even as states start sending out mail ballots. This is the third time the administration has asked the high court to intervene. The high court has allowed the plan to move forward but not ruled on whether it is legal. Democratic states and voting rights groups say the changes are unconstitutional.
