Well-preserved tooth from Pacific mastodon found in a creek in San Francisco Bay Area

Brigid Lynch was working along a wooded creek in a mountainous part of the San Francisco Bay Area on a habitat restoration project when something that didn’t look like the rocks she’d been studying caught her eye. It turned out to be the fossilized tooth of a Pacific mastodon. Lynch, a geomorphologist at Balance Hydrologics, made the discovery earlier this year. She spotted the fossil while working on a project to protect the threatened California red-legged frog in a preserve in San Mateo County. The public land management agency announced the find this week, and that it has been donated to Stanford University.

Martin McDonagh’s 'Wild Horse Nine' hits Venice Film Festival with a dark CIA tale

Martin McDonagh has crafted a new film, “Wild Horse Nine,” which debuted Thursday at the Venice Film Festival to a 13-minute standing ovation.
Iran has fired at Kuwait as part of its retaliation for U.S. bombardments earlier this week. Kuwait's Ministry of Defense reported that air defenses intercepted missiles and drones on Thursday. Trump urges South Carolinians to make Sen. Darline Graham the GOP nominee for US Senate

President Donald Trump says the first step toward keeping Darline Graham as a U.S. senator from South Carolina involves helping her win a Republican runoff next week. The Republican president also begged supporters to pretend he's on the ballot Tuesday. Trump was nodding to the reality that Republican base voters lose interest in elections when he isn't on the ballot. Trump went to Myrtle Beach on Friday to support Sen. Darline Graham, his chosen candidate to succeed her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham. She is serving out the remainder of her brother's term. She faces Rep. Ralph Norman in Tuesday's runoff.

Israel's deadly Gaza strikes cast doubt on ceasefire progress days after Kushner visit

Deadly airstrikes in Gaza on Wednesday have raised doubts about new U.S. efforts to advance a ceasefire there. Local hospitals and the Palestinian Red Crescent say at least 10 people were killed in two strikes, days after a U.S. envoy met with Israel's prime minister. Witnesses said Israeli troops also crossed the ceasefire line and detained a Hamas police colonel. Israel’s military said the strikes targeted Hamas commanders involved in previous attacks. The Palestinian Red Crescent said a strike on a police station killed at least nine people. On the diplomatic front, ceasefire negotiations appear stalled, with disagreements over Hamas' disarmament and Israel's withdrawal.

US stocks rise, even as the bond market applies more pressure

U.S. stocks rose and trimmed their losses from a shaky week. That's even though the bond market, which has been the center of Wall Street’s action, remained jumpy and added more pressure Friday. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% for just its second gain in the six days since setting its all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1%, and the Nasdaq composite climbed 0.4%. Ross Stores rallied after reporting stronger profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected, and a report suggesting strong growth in U.S. business activity raised hopes for corporate profits broadly. Oil prices climbed.
