Edouard weakens into a tropical depression after landfall but still dumping rain into Texas

The former Tropical Storm Edouard weakened into a depression while unleashing heavy rains and strong winds on parts of Texas. It knocked out power to thousands on Tuesday and also toppled trees and flooded roads. The National Hurricane Center says the storm had made landfall in the small coastal community of Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, arriving with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. It weakened as it moved inland and traveled over southeastern Texas. In the meantime, several storms were brewing in the Pacific Ocean, including Lowell, which reached hurricane strength earlier in the day.

In the Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Lowell is expected to rapidly intensify and reach the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands later this week. Elsewhere in the Pacific, Hurricane Karina became a powerful Category 4 hurricane on Monday. It isn't threatening land but could send high surf to parts of California and Mexico.

Trump focuses on violent crime reduction as he boosts GOP candidates at New York police academy

President Donald Trump has highlighted his record on crime and safety during a visit to New York, pivoting to one of his strongest issues as he looks to boost Republicans in battleground races ahead of the November midterms. Trump was visiting the Nassau County police academy on Friday in suburban Long Island. But despite the setting and an array of uniformed local police officers behind him on stage, the event was overwhelmingly a political one, with Trump lashing Democrats and promoting his record and his party’s candidates. The new FBI statistics released Friday showed the homicide rate in the United States dropped to the lowest it’s been in 75 years. The report on 2025 crime statistics also showed that overall violent crime dropped 9.3% last year.

National Code Talker Day brings 101-year-old veteran to Phoenix

Navajo Code Talkers are being honored in a longstanding national day of recognition. Thomas H. Begay, one of the last living Code Talkers, was among those who gathered Friday in Phoenix to recognize the vital role he and other recruits played in World War II. Hundreds of Navajos were recruited by the Marine Corps to communicate with a set of terms based on their native language. The Japanese were unable to crack the code. The military program was classified until 1968. President Ronald Reagan in 1982 signed a proclamation designating Aug. 14 as the official day to honor the Navajos and all Native Americans who served in the war.

Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO

Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The 28-year-old Mangione acknowledged his actions Friday at a hastily scheduled hearing in Manhattan. At sentencing, he faces life in prison. His lawyers are now seeking to dismiss a separate New York state murder case on double jeopardy grounds. The case has become a fulcrum for debate about the healthcare industry and made Mangione a cause célèbre for some of its critics.

New aircraft carrier heads toward Mideast after reports of issues on long-deployed USS Lincoln

The Pacific-based aircraft carrier USS George Washington has begun heading toward the Middle East as reports have emerged of mental health and supply issues aboard the long-deployed USS Abraham Lincoln. The Lincoln has been supporting the U.S. war against Iran, and its deployment has included a record-setting uninterrupted time at sea of more than 240 days. Several Democratic lawmakers are pressing the Pentagon for accountability over conditions aboard the carrier. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday said those were “completely misrepresented.” The Navy acknowledges that the war has created an environment “where traditional supply hubs in the Middle East were disrupted by combat actions.”

The sell-off for AI stars worsens, while oil prices keep jumping

The sell-off for AI winners deepened and yanked stock markets lower worldwide. The S&P 500 fell 1% Friday to finish its first losing week in the last three and only its third since March. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite sank 1.4%. Nvidia was the heaviest weight on the market and briefly gave up its status as the most valuable stock on Wall Street. The worries about whether AI stocks have shot too high dragged down Asian markets even more sharply. Oil prices jumped again on worries about the war with Iran, but longer-term Treasury yields eased.
