Greg Abbott says a third person has been confirmed killed by catastrophic floods this month that prompted more than 500 rescues, damaged homes and businesses, and are still making some areas inaccessible. Abbott said Friday that a person was swept away after attempting to drive through floodwaters Monday. The governor on Friday flew over the city of Cotulla, about 90 miles southwest of San Antonio, to assess the damage of floodwaters he said have left some areas of the city still unreachable.</p>
<p>A nun who was taken into immigration custody last month in Texas is speaking out for the first time about her arrest while walking to Mass. Sister Leticia Ugboaja is pleading for people to have the chance to be heard before being taken into custody. Ugboaja was released several hours after being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers on June 28. Ugboaja’s attorney says she has for years been granted protection from removal to her native Nigeria because she was likely to face torture there. Parish officials’ posting about her on social media brought attention to her case, and Congress members ultimately intervened on her behalf.</p>
<p>Tropical Storm Bertha has made landfall in Louisiana. Early Thursday morning the storm was moving west toward Texas. The storm has been forecast to reach the upper Texas coast on Thursday before dissipating inland in Texas by Friday. Damaging winds and storm surges are the main threats for the Deep South states. The National Hurricane Center says a tropical storm warning includes New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain. Storm surges up to 3 feet are possible, as well as heavy rain. The storm earlier forced beach closures in the Florida Panhandle and along the tips of Alabama and Mississippi.</p>
<p>Kaylee Hottle, a deaf actor known for her roles in two “Godzilla” films, has died in a car crash in Maryland. She was 18. The Frederick County Sheriff's Office reports the crash happened early Tuesday morning. Hottle was one of two passengers when the car went off the road. The driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. In “Godzilla vs. Kong” and the sequel, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” Hottle played an orphaned girl named Jia who sees beyond Kong’s threatening appearance and forms a special bond with the monster. Her parents, who are also deaf, shared emotional tributes online. The crash is under investigation.</p>

<p>The U.S. military has confirmed that a third service member is believed to be dead in Friday’s attack on a base in Jordan and identified them as Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of Ozone Park, New York. The U.S. military has also identified a soldier killed while disarming an Iranian drone in Iraq as Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton from North Carolina. The military said Tuesday that Swinton will receive a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Badge, and be promoted to staff sergeant. They were the first U.S. troop deaths from direct Iranian fire since the opening days of the war.</p>
<p>Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to weaken in the Gulf of Mexico as it chugs closer to the U.S. But forecasters say it still could bring coastal flooding and heavy rain from the Florida Panhandle to Louisiana. Those areas along the northern Gulf Coast are under a tropical storm warning through Wednesday and could see rain and flooding into Thursday morning. New Orleans is under a tropical storm warning. Authorities in Mississippi, Louisiana and Florida have opened sites to provide sandbags. Red flag warnings are posted along some Gulf Coast beaches advising swimmers about the dangers of rip tides.</p>
